Princeton Noontime Hockey
About N-T-H
Students, Faculty, and Staff from around the University get together at lunchtime
at Baker Rink for pickup, nonchecking hockey. Usually about 12 to 14 people
come out for each session depending on time of year and University scheduling.
We begin the season in September and end in May with the end of the varsity
hockey season. Everyone must pay $50 each semester in order to play. The skill
level of the players ranges from those who have only ever played intramural
hockey to those who have played on college varsity teams.
The group communicates via an e-mail list noontime-hockey@princeton.edu
To have yourself added to this list, send a request to Henry Umanksy.
Requirements
- You must bring your own equipment to each skate including: helmet
with full facemask,
skates, gloves, shinguards, and stick. You will not be provided a place to
store your equipment.
- You must skate well enough to provide for your own (and other's) safety.
You must have good balance and be able to stop abruptly.
- You must sign a waiver form and pay a very reasonable fee.
- Uncooperative attitudes will not be tolerated. Baker Rink is provided to
us basically free of charge and without supervision. Our icetime should be
viewed as a privilege, not an entitlement .
Parking
Parking used to be easier. Now, as on most University campuses, it's difficult.
For the essential information, take a look at the
Map of Parking Lots.
- If you have a university parking permit that allows you to park in one
of the lots near Baker Rink, good for you! You're set.
- If you have a university parking permit, but it doesn't allow you to
park in one of the lots near the rink, you're out of luck. You are not even
allowed to park in visitor spaces! You'll either need to ride the bus,
risk a ticket by parking in a lot to which you are not assigned,
or park in public parking by the Dinky station or the Wawa. Sorry.
- If you do not have a university parking permit, you can park in the
visitor lot, shown as lot #23 in green on the
map.
Notes
- This season (2010-2011) we generally skate on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The full schedule is shown on the Baker
Rink Ice Schedule
- The skate usually lasts until 1:00 PM. Sometimes we are kicked out promptly
at 1:00, sometimes we have to leave earlier or can skate longer, all depending
on facilities scheduling.
- Athletic department scheduling takes priority. Sometimes we lose our icetime
because a varsity team schedules a practice.
- Just about the only thing that gets the rink staff really worked up, is
someone taking their parking space and guys skating without face masks. Do
not park in any of the 5 spaces just outside the North - Balcony side of the
rink and wear a face mask when you skate!
- Bring a solid black and solid orange jersey if you have them. At least one
jersey order is placed each year. If you don't have a black and orange
jersey then ask to be included in the order. If you miss the
order, then you can order inexpensive practice jerseys at
http://www.hockeymonkey.com/
- Help other skaters who are looking to improve their games by
sharing your knowledge and experience.
Calendars
We have a couple of calendars:
Season Ending Game
Each year we have a competitive game at the end of the season. We
assign two team captains, hold a player draft, and then have a timed and
refereed game. The general rule is that you must have skated at least 5
times and paid your regular fees in the second semester in order to play
in the season ending game. Exceptions will be made if there are not
enough eligible players to make two teams each with ten skaters and a goalie.
