A letter from a reader about Truth value, functional value, and diversity In support of diversity (cover
story, Feb. 14), let me adduce the following:
The truth value of an assertion depends not at all upon the notation in which
it is expressed, nor upon the race or national origin of the party employing
the notation. Functional value is not dependent upon structural components. A
coal miner’s desire for a canary finds no counterpart in a truth-seeker’s
naive resort to structural features for guidance, a la the reading of entrails
