PHI524 Systematic Ethics: Themes from Setiya, Bratman, and Dancy
Fall 2008
Michael Smith
Course Materials
The seminar will devote four weeks each to studying the work of three contemporary philosophers: Kieran Setiya (Pittsburgh), Michael Bratman (Stanford), and Jonathan Dancy (Reading/UT Austin). In the first three weeks we will study a selection of their work. In the fourth week they will visit, give a presentation, and answer questions. During their visit we will also have the opportunity to discuss their work with them more informally over lunch and dinner. The reading, which must be done prior to each seminar, will in most cases be downloadable by clicking on the names of the chapters/papers posted below.
1. Kieran Setiya
In the first two sessions we will read Setiya's Reasons Without Rationalism (Princeton University Press, 2007). Those wishing to attend should buy a copy and read it in advance. If you are unable to get hold of a copy, email me immediately at: msmith@princeton.edu
