Welcome to the home of Kalaa,

Princeton's Classical Indian Dance Troupe!

Kalaa is the Sanskrit word for "art". Our purpose is simply to share our art with the Princeton and greater New Jersey community. We began humbly in the winter of the 2002-2003 academic year with only six dancers and have produced several shows since. We also hold weekly classes on campus for those interested in learning classical Indian dance.

Our show this year is

Shakthi: Heroines of India

on
Friday, April 18th, 6:00 pm and
Saturday, April 19th, 2:00 pm
at
Whitman Theatre

The shows features a variety of pieces, each showing different aspects of the heroines in Indian tales.
The pieces this year include:
Invocation
Alarippu
Enna Thavam Seithanai: The poet asks what penance Yashodha did, in all her former lives, to earn the reward of being the mother of God. Kalaa has taken the liberty of interpreting this piece as a soliloquy in which Yashodha asks this very question of herself, after realizing the power of the little boy Krishna that she has adored, scolded, and fretted over all these years.
Durga Piece
Traditional Kuchipudi Dance
Savithri Piece
Thillana (Raaga Mand): A group of village girls get together one a beautiful day, and decide to leave behind their chores to dance their way to the temple of the goddess Gowri.
