 Nanocrystalline Transformer Winding
Gregory Skofronick, Darren Hammell '01
Princeton Power Systems
This image is of a transformer that sits at the core of Princeton
Power’s electrical power converters. The transformer "core" is
comprised of thousands of nano-scale layers banded together into a
solid structure. The bright red outer winding seen here is thousands
of strands of braided copper cabling, coated in a non-conductive
insulator and wrapped around the core. Princeton Power incorporates
"nanocrystalline transformers" into power converters used in
highly-efficient large-scale solar, wind turbine, and hydropower
systems.
