Hyperuniform Disordered Photonic Band Gap Materials

Marian Florescu (research scholar), Paul J. Steinhardt (fac) and Salvatore Torquato (fac)
Departments of Physics and Chemistry, and Princeton Center for Theoretical Sciences
Pictured is a disordered network of dielectric material that blocks light of any polarization and from any direction in the plane over a substantial range of frequencies. Also shown is the electric field pattern for an electromagnetic wave propagating through the network with a frequency just below the forbidden range. The unique functionalities enabled by these novel disordered structures have direct applications to highly efficient energy harvesting and conversion devices.
