This is a movie of serial sections through a mouse peripheral ganglion. This relatively new technique, called serial section block-face scanning electron microscopy, is a way of visualizing 3D nanostructure. As the movie progresses, one can identify individual neurons as well as their intracellular compartments and organelles (e.g. nuclei and mitochondria). Located at the areas between neurons are smaller cells called glia, which are a type of support cell.
