An independent filmmaker since 1952, Peter Kubelka is a multifaceted artist and theoretician who has worked in film, cooking, music, architecture, speaking and writing. He communicates through lectures which also use nonverbal elements "to free our worldview from being the exclusive property of language."

Born in 1934 in Vienna where he lives, Kubelka grew up in a peasant village in Upper Austria. He received an early musical education, became a member of the Vienna Choir Boys, and went on to study in Vienna and Rome. Kubelka´s cinematographic work is short and highly condensed. His "Metric Films" preceded and laid the ground for structural cinema. "Unsere Afrikareise" defines the language of sound film.

 

  

In 1964, Kubelka co-founded the Austrian Film Museum and was its curator for many decades. In 1978, he became professor for film at the Art Academy (Staedelschule) in Frankfurt. Kubelka's theoretical work on cooking began in 1967, and in 1980 his teaching position was expanded to include "Film and Cooking as Forms of Art." Also in 1980, he founded the music ensemble "Spatium Musicum" with which he performed in his "Nonverbal Lectures." In 1970, he co-founded the Anthology Film Archives in New York and designed the viewing space, the "Invisible Cinema." Kubelka has lectured extensively in the United States since 1966.
